Ranger DentfaceSelf publishedGraphic Novel

Jarrod Elvin; Writer, Artist

Wandering in the mystical undead realm of the DownUnderworld, Oleo comes to a crossroads where his choices could change his fortunes forever, but he chooses poorly and is forced to wear a mark of shame; a horrid scar on his swollen chin. Now he must overcome his inner demons and personal monsters to prove he is a hero and live the good life he thinks he deserves.
‘Insanity peppers’ and the ‘Day of the Dead’ collide in this psychedelic spirit quest that reveals a spooky yet colourful world of zombies, demons, a giant yellow-bellied chicken and an almost-noble steed amongst a twisted landscape of Australiana. Also throw into the mix a beautiful yet cunning burlesque dancer, with struggles of her own as a single mother also trying to escape this realm of Limbo before the whole world comes crashing down around them all.

In an age with increasing challenges across environment, economy and governments, there is a heightened awareness of the importance of communication and cooperation between groups.

This short comic outlines a series of tools for communication across diverse groups, in a clear, simple and easily understood way, with the hopes of creating better communication, regardless of your race, religion or political leanings.

The principles outlined in this article are important to many controversies in science, media and politics. Most of the concepts apply as well to conversations with small groups, or to debates with friends and family.

DEMONS: Episode 1 - A Saviour's Born. Issue 1Self publishedGraphic Novel, Comic Book Series, Comic Book

David Coyle, writer, director.
Rafal Banasiak, artist.

Issue 1 serves as both a standalone story and your gateway into the world of DEMONS, an integrated society of humans and vampires which questions who the true demons are.
In this introductory issue, the once mythological vampire has emerged into reality. Perhaps fearing the beginning of the apocalypse, masses flock to the church seeking salvation and solace. In one such church they encounter an unusual stranger bearing a golden bible and mysterious tattoos. But in DEMONS as in life, things are never as they seem.
DEMONS uses the supernatural metaphor of vampires as a brutally candid commentary
on humanity that delves deeper and darker into the cold truths of the human psyche than other stories ever dare to venture.

In 2019 I embarked on my most ambitious project to date, bringing together 12 creative minds to develop a series of 8 short stories that built upon the world of The Talking Bread original 6 part series.

My drive for creating this collaboration was to encourage the comic book community to band together and support each other and bring out the best in each other. By pairing writers and illustrators together that may not have been familiar with each other’s work, we created something magical. Each creative artist has bought their own spark to this anthology.

The Wrath of the Cursed #3Matt Kyme with Halftone Productions Comic Book

Matt Kyme - Writer & Artist
Kieran Jack - Varient Artist
Graham Jackson - Letterer

For consideration in 2019 release, is the first of its kind variant comic book.
The Wrath of the Cursed was the brain child of Matt Kyme. In early 2019 he approached me with a crazy idea of having a comic issue with 2 variants, but not in tradition way a variant cover, rather it would be completely illustrated by another artist. I thought is was a great idea but I had to ask

“Matt who’s crazy enough to take on such a challenge” to which he replied “ That’s why I’m asking you!”

And you know what, I was that crazy enough to take on this challenge to recreate Matt’s panels and warping them In to my own style, following his script. The end result that you see here is from a combination of collaboration and love of making comics.

Sneaky Goblins at CollegeSelf PublishedComic Book, Collected Short Stories

Rene Pfitzner, Creator, Writer, Artist

This book includes 3 fun fantasy stories:
Goblins at College: Dank and Sophie were students at Fitch's Academy for Young Assassins. Dank struggled with the practical aspects of the course, and he wasn’t always great with the book-learning, either. How did he get his grades up and what gave him the passion to do it?
Bog the Orc: Bog might be a giant, beefy orc with decent mutton chops, but he never quite fit in. What kind of orc leaves his tribe and strikes out alone in this wild and dangerous world? This short comic reveals all.
Stop the Dragon: Dank, Bog and Sonya the Wizard arrive in a small town, hounded by a terrible menace: a greedy, fire-breathing dragon! They'd rather avoid a fight, but they are quickly drawn into the town's nightmare. They'll need to work together to defeat a foe more powerful than any of them have faced before!

#METOO: STORIES FROM THE AUSTRALIAN MOVEMENTPicador AustraliaAnthology

Sarah Firth

'An extremely important anthology' Tracey Spicer

In October 2017, the hashtag MeToo went viral.

Since then we've watched controversy erupt around Geoffrey Rush, Germaine Greer and Junot Díaz. We've talked about tracking the movement back via Helen Garner, Rosie Batty and Hannah Gadsby. We've discussed #NotAllMen, toxic masculinity and trolls. We've seen the #MeToo movement evolve and start to accuse itself - has it gone too far? Is it enough? What does it mean in this country?

And still, women are not safe from daily, casual sexual harassment and violence.

In this collection thirty-five contributors share their own #MeToo stories, analysis and commentary to survey the movement in an Australian context.

This collection resists victimhood. It resists silence. It insists on change.

Choice WordsAllen & UnwinAnthology

Sarah Firth

Choice Words: A collection of writing about abortion is a cri de coeur; a passionate appeal from writers, thinkers, musicians, actors, comedians, activists and political staffers, offering personal stories of abortion alongside historical records and political anecdotes.

At a time when abortion is a criminal act and prosecution is a real risk in parts of Australia, this book is needed more than ever. In 2018, the world watched aghast when a Tasmanian woman lost her job at a high-profile sporting agency for tweeting the truth: even in states where abortion is legal, access can be nearly impossible.

This treasury of stories highlights the sheer, unspoken commonality of abortion. Women have been dealing with the risks and the fall-out for longer than there is record. It is poignant, wise, funny and true; a salute to those who have been working in the field, a celebration of how far we've come, an electrifying caterwaul at how far we still have to go, and a clarion call to action.

Contributors include Jane Caro, Claudia Karvan, Laura Jean, Melissa Lucashenko, Emily Maguire, Tara June Winch, Michelle Law, Tony Birch, Melanie Cheng, Anne Summers, Gideon Haigh, Monica Dux, Bri Lee, Jenny Kee, and a Foreword by Tanya Plibersek. Proceeds from Choice Words will go to the charity Marie Stopes Australia, the only national, independently-accredited, not-for-profit safe abortion provider, that has helped more than 600,000 women in the past twenty years.

The ResurrectedCarnouche ProductionsCollected Series: Trade Paperback

Christian Carnouche, writer.

The year is 2037 and the world as we know it has changed dramatically. With all the colossal technological advancements of the age, the most significant came from Drexler Nanotech Corporation, who created a serum engineered to resurrect the dead. The ethical implications were widespread and the serum was ultimately banned the world over.

It is in this setting, that an Aboriginal-Australian detective, Cain Duluth, and his Japanese-American partner, Akimi Ozaki, work for the Special Division for the Resurrected (SDR) in Nova Lucis, the newly created United Nations city-state off the east coast of the United States.

The SDR’s mission is to pursue and permanently detain ‘Rezzies’ (individuals who have been resurrected using the prohibited serum). Their investigation of a brutal murder of a Rezzy launches Cain and Akimi into a clash with Drexler Nanotech and its enigmatic CEO, Xander Calypse, in a desperate bid to save Cain’s people from almost certain extinction. If they are to succeed, Cain must re-discover his Indigenous roots, while also finally learning to overcome the loss of his family who died in the techno-plague that ravaged Australia five years earlier.

Katabatic (Issues 1 to 3)Self publishedComic Book Series, Digital only / Webcomic

Jennifer Reuter

A sky nomad follows a fissure cutting through the clouds. She's keen to catch up with what carved it in the first place. But her journey is far from the lonesome expedition she expected it to be.

An adventure story in the sky running parallel to ordinary life stories below, laced with growth in social maturity. Upon completion, the story will have four chapters. Please note: the first issue/chapter was published in 2018, but because I did not submit it to the Long List then, I've included it for reference purposes here.

Cockroaches for LunchSelf PublishedGraphic Novel, Zine

Writer: Claire Wildish
Illustrators: Claire Wildish with Jonah & Hugo Hobart

“Cockroaches for Lunch” is a zine slash graphic picture book, inspired by a little newspaper article my Dad once sent me entitled, “Cockroaches flee captivity”. It is crazy conversation of caged cockroaches, madcap supporting characters, and a daring escape. Is is written in the voice of Hugo my youngest, in the way both he and Jonah tell me stories. Stories they’ve heard in the playground, on TV, that they’ve half heard and re-imagined bigger and better than they were told themselves - like school yard Chinese whispers. Later, when I started illustrating it over the breakfast table, between making school lunches and tying shoelaces, they declared they could draw it better than me and so we illustrated it together.

Geoff Augustine, writer and cartoonist

When Australian cartoonist, Geoff Augustine was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in 2018 he responded the only way he knew how - by cartooning his personal cancer journey over eighteen months. From diagnosis, treatments, side effects and contemplating terminal outcomes he sets out to 'fund the funny' along the way.
While cancer is absolutely 'no laughing matter' Geoff's work is one man sharing his experience while hopefully lightening the burden for others through humour.
