Since Late October 2019 I have published a comic page each day on my Instagram detailing my life growing up as a Bisexual woman in Australia. I believe it is important to document these experiences and share my story with others to promote compassion and open up the dialogue about sexual health whilst being critical and funny, particularly in the aftermath of the Australian Plebiscite. While the comic series is still currently on going I have printed and self published a hard copy of 50 pages from 2019.

This project appeared in SuperAustralians. It was one chapter of a larger story (which has also been submitted separately under a different format category by the editor Christopher Sequeira). Each chapter showcased an Australian hero battling some kind of menace somewhere in Australia or its territories. This submission’s story featured the hero Tom Scattergood, an convict from the First Fleet days who has lived an preternaturally long life, and gained some extraordinary abilities along the way. He, assisted by a friend in ASIO, finds himself battling a horde of savage predators in the Blue Mountains.

The story covers several bands he has been involved with since 1993, finishing with horror-themed mosh band The Dead Walk, who disbanded in 2008.

‘Cabramatta’ is an interactive comic about growing up in a suburb of Vietnam War refugees as it became Australia’s heroin capital. It combines hand drawn illustration with custom sound design, web programming and animation to create an original mobile and web presentation. This interactive comic was commissioned by The Believer Magazine with support from the Tran Thi Oanh Black Mountain Institute Fund and thanks to my editor & AD, Kristen Radtke. In 2019 I embarked on my most ambitious project to date, bringing together 12 creative minds to develop a series of 8 short stories that built upon the world of The Talking Bread original 6 part series.

My drive for creating this collaboration was to encourage the comic book community to band together and support each other and bring out the best in each other. By pairing writers and illustrators together that may not have been familiar with each other’s work, we created something magical. Each creative artist has bought their own spark to this anthology.

The Wrath of the Cursed was the brain child of Matt Kyme. In early 2019 he approached me with a crazy idea of having a comic issue with 2 variants, but not in tradition way a variant cover, rather it would be completely illustrated by another artist. I thought is was a great idea but I had to ask

“Matt who’s crazy enough to take on such a challenge” to which he replied “ That’s why I’m asking you!”

And you know what, I was that crazy enough to take on this challenge to recreate Matt’s panels and warping them In to my own style, following his script. The end result that you see here is from a combination of collaboration and love of making comics.

Australia’s first ever San Diego Comic Con Exclusive of an ongoing series XCT: Spartacus was released in 2019 at the biggest comic convention in the world.

Rewritten and an extra page added it was a great opportunity to remaster the original story from Australia’s number one selling independent comic series.

The SDCC exclusive was limited to only 250 copies and was a great success.

“Cockroaches for Lunch” is a zine slash graphic picture book, inspired by a little newspaper article my Dad once sent me entitled, “Cockroaches flee captivity”. It is crazy conversation of caged cockroaches, madcap supporting characters, and a daring escape. Is is written in the voice of Hugo my youngest, in the way both he and Jonah tell me stories. Stories they’ve heard in the playground, on TV, that they’ve half heard and re-imagined bigger and better than they were told themselves - like school yard Chinese whispers. Later, when I started illustrating it over the breakfast table, between making school lunches and tying shoelaces, they declared they could draw it better than me and so we illustrated it together.

From diagnosis, treatments, side effects and contemplating terminal outcomes he sets out to 'fund the funny' along the way.
While cancer is absolutely 'no laughing matter' Geoff's work is one man sharing his experience while hopefully lightening the burden for others through humour.
