Plato’s Republic is one of the pre-eminent works of philosophy and political theory in the Western canon. Arguably the most famous section of the Republic appears at the start of book VII, The Allegory of the Cave, which explores the effects of education on how we perceive the world around us. This famous allegory is adapted here into the medium of comics. Using clear and concise storytelling, this adaptation adds clarity and depth to the words of Plato, adapted from the translation by Benjamin Jowett.

Never Never Land (featured in Tales of Neverland from Dren Productions)

Never Never Land is based loosely on the life of May Gibbs, whose experience of arriving in Western Australia from England inspired her illustrated works Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. The story's title is a riff on the term the Never Never, indicating how the life of Gibbs has been merged with the fictional adventures of Wendy Darling for this Peter Pan anthology.

18:12 came about as I was thinking of the local park near my childhood home in Perth, and the endless afternoons I spent alone just hanging from the monkey bars or on the swing set or just lying in the grass doing nothing much at all.

That small suburban park was always so quiet and my neighbourhood was so safe - maybe times were different then, as I was just 7 or 8 when I started to venture to the park alone. As carefree as I was though, once the sunset dimmed and the first few buzzes of mosquitoes started humming, I always began to make my way back home.

Tx! MAG is a serialised health education comic - providing easy to read info on community health care options for viral hepatitis (hep C and hep B). Now in it's 10th year, Tx! is published three times a year by Hepatitis NSW with creative input from Gestalt using Australian creators.

Edition #38 tells the story of Andy and April as they decide to test for hep C using an mail-in kit and learn about options for treatment and cure should they have hep C. With great art by Paul Mason (Phantom) and an engaging story by Grace Crowley (Magellan)!

Turtlenecks is a 124-page Graphic Novel written and drawn by Steven Christie and published by small press comics publisher AdHouse Books in 2021. It's the story of an art school student who accidentally turns one of his most prized possessions (a bright blue flower necklace) into an art object, the only way to get it back is to stage an elaborate conceptual-art heist with his friends.
The book was drawn, lettered and coloured by hand in 2020 while the artist was living in Brooklyn. The majority of the work was completed whilst living in lockdown during the first major outbreak of Covid-19 in New York.

'For those who came in late' Pussy Willow, is an operative of the clandestine British intelligence agency known as the - Female Erotic Espionage League - or F.E.E.L. for short. All F.E.E.L.'s operatives are highly trained in espionage, the martial arts and especially, ........all the arts of seduction.
Following on from her debut adventure in "On Lesbos" we find Pussy Willow, agent of F.E.E.L. between assignments, enjoying a drive through the English countryside in her vintage sports car. Stopping "to spend a penny" quickly leads Pussy into a dangerous encounter with a few members of the "Rat Pack" Motorcycle gang. Luckily, the danger is soon defused by the arrival of more Rat Pack members, led by the gallant, ex military commando, Captain Jeremy Muskett. A mutual attraction between Pussy and Jeremy leads to a late supper, and Pussy accepting an invitation to spend the night with Jeremy at his nearby cottage. After a night and day of passions shared, they seemingly go their separate ways.
However, that evening acting on her intuition, Pussy tails Jeremy and the Rat Pack to the Thornecrag Manor estate of the rich and renown, eccentric biologist, Doctor Maledict. Unbeknownst to all, Pussy witnesses an event there, that causes her great concern, it being a possible threat to national security, and decides to report her findings to F.E.E.L.'s director, Mrs. Weatherbee, she in turn liases with MI5 and a joint operation is implemented to ascertain if Doctor Maledict's plans are those of a harmless eccentric.....or something much more sinister.

A Week In Warrigilla is a full-colour graphic novel published on Tapas and Webtoon about girlfriends Hazel (known thinker, but also worrier) and Willie (master of chaos and poorly timed humor) getting lost on their road trip through regional Queensland. it is an episodic supernatural horror, its inspirations include science fiction, cryptid lore, and regional gothic.

as of early 2021, the comic is complete in its digital publication and has print editions of the first two chapters available, but is not yet finalised for print in omnibus. we are submitting the work (under guidance of Tim McEwen) for cataloguing purposes now that it is complete as a digital graphic novel that was fully published in 2021; however we would like to refrain from being considered for an award until we have finished and public the omnibus print edition (which will include additional cuts and new scenes) as we'd love to be judged on our best and final work.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to its knees. When we weren’t sheltering in place, we were advised to wear masks, wash our hands, and practice social distancing. We watched in horror as medical personnel worked around the clock to care for the sick and dying. Businesses were shuttered, travel stopped, workers were furloughed, and markets dropped. And people continued to die.
Amid all this uncertainty, writers and artists from around the world continued to create comics, commenting directly on how individuals, societies, governments, and markets reacted to the worldwide crisis. COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology collects more than sixty such short comics from a diverse set of creators, including indie powerhouses, mainstream artists, Ignatz and Eisner Award winners, and media cartoonists. In narrative styles ranging from realistic to fantastic, they tell stories about adjusting to working from home, homeschooling their kids, missing birthdays and weddings, and being afraid just to leave the house. They probe the failures of government leaders and the social safety net. They dig into the racial bias and systemic inequities that this pandemic helped bring to light. We see what it’s like to get the virus and live to tell about it, or to stand by helplessly as a loved one passes.

At times heartbreaking and at others hopeful and humorous, these comics express the anger, anxiety, fear, and bewilderment we feel in the era of COVID-19. Above all, they highlight the power of art and community to help us make sense of a world in crisis, reminding us that we are truly all in this together.

The comics in this collection have been generously donated by their creators. A portion of the the proceeds from the sale of this volume are being donated by the publisher to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) in support of comics shops, bookstores, and their employees who have been adversely affected by the pandemic.

Join Joanne and Conrad, their friends, their family, their coworkers, and a stream of expert medical practitioners as they experience the highs and the lows, the tears and the laughter in this sensitive but unflinching portrayal of the hope and heartbreak offered to so many by modern medicine.

As you drive is one of my illustrated poems. It is based on the surreal feeling of falling asleep on long drives and how, if you are lucky, falling in love can feel the same. If you drive into the water you have to lower the windows and allow water into the car. Only once you are fully submerged can you open the door, so you aren’t hit with the full pressure of the water rushing in. I love that weird fact and think it is a good metaphor for the gradual process of opening up to someone and letting your guard down.

A labour of love inspired by award winning comic creators and hosts of the Cartoonist Kayafabe YouTube channel, Ed Piskor and Jim Rugg, Image Grand Design/Disaster is the result of dozens of writers, artists, colourists, letterers, and comics fans from around the world coming together during a global pandemic to create the ultimate fan comic in celebration of the 90's books from our youth and the founding of Image Comics!

With all proceeds being donated to the Hero Initiative, Image Grand Design/Disaster is not for profit, and a work of satire. No Image character was harmed in the making of this book and the events here in do not take place in the normal Image continuity. This is a work of fan-fiction and done for fun as artists were locked away in quarantine. All creators involved donated their time and work, as a way to give back to other creators who were not so lucky in these hard times.

Western Australia is home to some of Australia’s best comic and graphic artists, who work to create stories that captivate and inspire.

For the first time ever, Neighbourhood Press has collected the work of thirty-six artists who were asked to create short comics or artworks to the theme of PLACE; including references to culture, society, geography and ecology. Artists involved in this anthology either live in Western Australia or have worked to foster a comic community here or within Australia more broadly.

All proceeds from this book will go towards creating more community based projects like this one, with the aim to promote and support local creatives.

Designed, Risograph printed and published by Neighbourhood Press as a limited run of 350 paperback books. Each 96 page book is 185mm x 260mm and is printed on uncoated FSC® certified paper using plant-based Risograph inks in black, blue, mint and fluorescent orange.

In many movies the hero struggles against the villain in their epic battle towards the end. It looks like the hero is going to lose... But suddenly! They witness a loved one die! As a result they are imbued with the energy to overcome their adversity.

Innocent Man follows the tragic story of Innocent Man, a super-human who only gets his powers when he watches a loved one die. The energy he receives from watching a loved one die is proportional to the amount of energy the hero has invested in the relationship.

Innocent Man is an answer to the utilitarian question of whether a person should flip the switch when a runaway train cart is heading towards many people but there is only one person on the other track.

This was a short form comic published in the exhibit, “Comic of Age”, for the Emerging Writers Festival. It touches on themes of growing apart from family and the struggles of self identity when growing up as an identical twin.

It was one of my first fully formed comics I had made. The comic was created using ink pens and watercolours.

A sequel to Isolazine, this issue expands on the themes of entering your 30s in Australia during a pandemic and pursuing joy through your identity and interests rather than these circumstances we find ourselves in. Special focus on Indigenous/queer/disabled reflections.

Heart of Millyera is a colourful, young adult, steampunk comic about a spirit as old as the universe and her unwittingly chosen guardians: the brilliant young geology student Ida and her colleagues, Gilbert and Celeste, who discover an interesting rock in the flooded ruins of an old settlement they are exploring. Millyera, the mysterious, shape-shifting water spirit, follows the young scientists, deadset on retrieving the rock which is seemingly extremely important to her.

Exploring the way we relate to one another after gaps in a relationship, After Lockdown Issue 1 is the first in a series taking stock of what's just happened in the past few years. This issue focuses on a mother and her child meeting for the first time after one of possibly many lockdowns and its repercussions. Written and devised by Lisa Parr and executed by Isaac Wilcox.

Julie Ditrich (writer) of THE ADVENTURE OF THE DRAGON'S LEG

THE ADVENTURE OF THE DRAGON'S LEG is a 2-part sequel to three Phantom stories written by Norman Walker and illustrated by George Bess that were published in the 1970s in issues #1781, #1782 and #1783.

Julie Ditrich was commissioned to write the sequel, which was published in THE PHANTOM: THE TREASURES OF DRAKON – THE RED DRAGON SAGA trade paperback. The linking device for all the stories in the trade paperback was that they featured an antagonist called Princess Sin who was obsessed with the Phantom and wanted to either possess him or kill him.

PLEASE NOTE: the flashback sequence in the first issue of THE ADVENTURE OF THE DRAGON'S LEG (pages 172 and 173 – the spread is to be read from left to right) references back to the climax in #1783 and maintains continuity, as well as segues into a survival story. It is important to understand this when assessing the material.

An anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy from the eyes of a Third World country.

Mountain Priest was created as part of the Future Lutruwita project, a graphic anthology that asked multiple artists to respond to ideas of possible futures Tasmanian or otherwise. This comic features a sentient fungal being spored from the ruins of a dying planet. It carries the consciousness of all time and space, able to penetrate human minds and remind them of the unity that nature originally intended for them. The Mountain Priest provides the vision for humans to see themselves once again as part of a larger, more ancient, ecological whole.

Australian Comics and the Autographic Turn' is a subjective webcomic and essay about the autographic nature of many recent Australian comics, focussing on issues of diversity and representation. This was made for the Folio project which is a welcome initiative to document and understand the medium of comics as a multimodal form.
