The page turn is a powerful storytelling technique that is almost entirely unique to the medium of comics. By the physical act of turning a page to reveal what’s on the other side; it can be used to pay off anticipation, imply momentum or hit with a sudden reveal!
A common way this is achieved is by building suspense at the bottom right corner of the comic spread, then having the reveal on the following page.
Each contributor of Monochromania: Page Turner took on the challenge of creating a narrative that uses the ‘page turn’ technique in only 3 comic pages!

Monochromania is a community-contributed, black-and-white comic anthology zine series created by The Illustration Club, first started in 2024. This latest Monochromania project, Page Turner, premiered at the 2025 Perth Comic Arts Festival Market Hall on Sunday July 13th at the Illo Club table, with plans for it to be available for sale at future events and other potential avenues in the future.

All funds raised by this project will go back into the club to contribute to, but not limited to; printing of club comic/art projects, venue hire costs, communal art supplies, tabling fees for events, workshops, and anything else the community needs.

This project is a cross-cultural storytelling initiative that celebrates scientific discoveries from the lush and rugged landscapes of Sulawesi, Indonesia and retells the ancient folklore of a formidable bloodthirsty giant centipede king and a doomed love triangle between two monkeys and a princess.

Funded by the Australia-Indonesia Institute (DFAT) and developed in collaboration with the University of Wollongong, the South Sulawesi Maros-Pangkep UNESCO Global Geopark, local cultural leaders, and scientific experts, this project produced two bilingual comics: one dedicated to unique local folklore stories, and another showcasing the region’s world-leading scientific discoveries. The project harnesses the power of comics to celebrate one of the most remarkable landscapes on Earth, where ancient stories and cutting-edge science collide.

South Sulawesi is home to a vast tower karst landscape riddled with over 600 caves – containing the oldest known figurative rock art in the world, dating back to an astonishing 51,200 years – and preserving climate records that stretch hundreds of thousands of years into the past. This project captures a sense of wonder and discovery, transforming groundbreaking research in archaeology, geology, biodiversity, and paleoclimate into visually compelling, accessible narratives.

Alongside the extraordinary science in the region, this project showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Bugis and Makassarese people, whose storytelling traditions remain central to local identity and ways of life. Two oral stories were shared with us by cultural custodians and carefully adapted into a comic for the first time. Through collaborative workshops, the project ensured that important cultural meanings, narrative, and visual elements were preserved with care and accuracy.

More than 500 comics have been distributed across South Sulawesi, supported by outreach and engagement activities that connected young people, educators, and communities with their environment and heritage. Copies are also being distributed in Australia, with the aim of reaching local schools and libraries to foster the exchange of cultural knowledge between Indonesia and Australia. This project demonstrates how comics can be a bridge between cultures and transform complex knowledge into something meaningful and engaging.

The story follows a group of misfit adventurers as they face off against a cult intent on destroying the world, several antediluvian evils and perhaps worst of all; parental trauma. Most of all, our heroes will need to discover what it truly means to save the world while making peace with who they are and where they're going. This is chapter one!

Contained inside the megachurch his parents run, Jeremiah realises early on that he's different - and at heart, an artist. Unsure whre to release his energy, he rebels against his teachers, church youth leaders, and most of all, parents. As church grows, Rosa begins to reveal her narcissism, and Jeremiah starts uncovering his religious trauma. Having discovered alt rock and body mods, and forming forbidden friendships, Jeremiah continues to feign his independence, asking the questions he's been too afraid to ask. But Rosa isn't ready to let him go just yet. Set against the backdrop of sunny Boorloo, this fictional memoir follows a young punk musician as he creates a place for him self as an artist, and lives up to his name.
