Ele Jenkins combines fibre art with comics to tell the story of caring for her chronically ill partner. The comic explores changing experiences of time, queer resilience, and the solace that can be found in handicrafts.

Maurice & The Metal is an indie comic series set in the mid-1980s that follows Maurice Hill, a lazy teenage metalhead and drummer who suddenly discovers he has impossible strength whenever he listens to heavy metal through his beat-up Walkman. Over the first three issues he’s dragged from a dead-end band existence into reluctant heroism -battling goth punks, confronting gloomy music forces, and slowly learning that his metal-powered abilities tie him to a larger struggle to “keep metal alive”.

In Issue 4, Into the Void, the story shifts into deeper territory. Maurice is beginning to understand more about his power and the responsibilities that come with it, stepping into the void of real purpose. As he trains (yes, even hitting the gym) and starts to accept what he’s meant to be, a growing darkness spreads through the Bay Area music scenes.
